The SSAC is proud to have accepted to have the conference in a remote locale, since it will give all attendees a lifetime opportunity to come in contact with the places, cultures and people of the North. This rare chance for you to meet other members and present your research will be rewarded with exciting tours and wonderful receptions. Join us, and encounter the North for yourself!

Travel to the North is not as expensive as it once was. There are now several flights daily to Yellowknife from Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver with Air Canada Jazz, and inquiries are being made for a possible charter flight out of Edmonton, Alberta. Another travel option is a 1,800 km trek by car on the paved Mackenzie Highway. There is a wide range of accommodation in Yellowknife. Our hosts will be providing more detail on the venue, accommodation and the tours this fall.

Our theme for the 2008 conference will be "Regionalism in Canadian Architecture" - a broad theme encompassing architectural expression related to region and locale. In keeping with the conditions of building in the North, regionalism in Canadian architecture is an important aspect of the country’s diversity. 'Regionalism' may be defined in traditional geographical terms, such as 'the North' or 'the Maritimes', in terms of identity, such as 'Aboriginal' or 'Roman Catholic', in technological terms, such as engineering, construction technology, or 'green architecture', or in regional stylistic terms, such as vernacular (historical, geographical and/or social contexts) or other forms of hybrid manifestations. We invite proposals for sessions, presentations, panels, roundtables, poster sessions and workshops that explore the role(s) of the regions – however the term "region" is defined – has evolved in Canadian history and society. Topics may include: defining regionalism, critical regionalism, environmental architecture, sustainable development, traditional building, adaptive re-use, ethnicity and the environment, or migration and settlement.

The Conference Committee prefers submission of a 250-word summary of a session proposal or paper abstract. Format of the sessions will be a reading of the paper (20 minutes maximum) and discussion. However, the conference committee also invites proposals for sessions in formats beyond the usual paper session. Submission of the completed paper prior to the session and dispensing with reading the paper will be acceptable. Panel discussions and roundtable sessions are also encouraged. (There may also be a videoconference session, linked to an institution or university in the south to enable participation of members in the discussions who are unable to attend the conference in person.)

Conference tours will profile the historical and contemporary architecture of Yellowknife and its surroundings.

All proposals must include the following:
  1. A cover page listing mailing address and email address, phone number, and affiliation of the participant(s).
  2. An abstract of no more than 250 words for the session proposal or paper abstract. (If there are papers already chosen for a session, please submit 150-word abstracts with the session proposal.)
  3. A brief c.v. or resumé for each participant
  4. Request for audio-visual equipment for the session.
Please note that the Conference Committee will make every effort to create sessions from topically related individual proposals. All presenters and other conference participants are expected to register for the annual meeting.
